Visit Hong Kong

After one year in Hong Kong (and still here) me and my girlfriend had frequent visits form friends and family. I decided to put the some of the must sees for visitors when coming to Hong Kong on this webpage.

First some facts about Hong Kong. (source: info.gov.hk)
Population (2006): 6 994 500
Land Area: 1 104 square kilometers
Population Density (as at mid-2006) : 6 470* persons per square kilometre.

When to visit

The best time to visit Hong Kong is autumn (Oct-Nov) or spring (April-May). That said any time is good to visit Hong Kong, although the summer months can be quite hot.

Geographically Hong Kong is made up of: Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, New Teritories and Outlying Islands.

Getting around

The underground system is called the MTR (for Mass Transportation System) is a nice and fast way to get around in Hong Kong. Compared to many western cities underground systems the HK system is very clean. The trains also run very frequent, 2-3 minutes between the trains is the norm.

Taxis is also a very convenient way to get around in HK. It is cheap, starting at 15HK$. On Hong Kong Island you can usually make yourself understood with English, but as a tourist it is a good idea to bring a map so you can point to the place you want to go.

The Tram is probably the most charming way to get around, and cheap, only 2 HK$. It is quite slow though.

Cross-Harbour Ferries is another very charming way of transport, this is also very cheap. You can for example take the Cross-Harbour Ferry from Tsim Tsa Tsui to either Central or Wan Chai.

Victoria Harbour

This is the postcard view of Hong Kong. Standing on the shore of Kowloon looking to Hong Kong Island with its skyscrapers over Victoria Harbour.

Central
Central is the main financial district of Hong Kong with many of the famous skyscrapers.

One IFC is the tallest building in Hong Kong with its 88 floors and 420 meters.

Bank of China is another landmark that can not be missed.

The Centre with it's changing colours at night is another high profile skyscraper in Central.

Lan Kwai Fong, a street in Central that has become the, western style bar area.

Wan Chai
Wan Chai holds the red light district of Hong Kong as well as many office buildings and a huge exhibition centre, Hong Kong Exhibition Centre.
